What is the setting for the novel or stories you are reading in class? What sort of language does the author use to help you visualize the setting? What is the mood of the story? How does this help you understand the characters and the plot?

The setting for the novel I have been reading in class, The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, is in North Carolina, in the 1940's after WWII. It is very peaceful, quaint, and has a very beautiful nature setting. The author uses imagery as he describes peaceful creeks, beautiful mountains in the distance, and trees surrounding everything. This helps me to understand the life of the characters being simple, and also helps me understand how they appreciate simple things, like watching a sunrise. Both Noah and Allie, the main characters, find beauty in most things that other overlook. For example, Noah relates himself to the creek, ebbing and flowing with the turns of life. The setting helps me understand the plot better also. If this story were not in the 1940's, many things would be different. For instance, Allie would have probably gotten caught in the act of cheating on Lon with Noah. Without the setting, the book would not be half as good.
Dark roads, broken fances, trash every where, and unpainted homes, crowded areas where people hang out at, and alot og violents going on every where. where am i? The author uses these discriptions because the book is mainly about gang violents he lets people know what it's like to be in the projects and what it looks like and what goes on there.
The setting of the Monkeys Paw takes place in a plain farm, probably out in the country in the middle of nowhere. The house probably is far from society, and the time period is most likely a little bit into the past. Most of the setting takes place in the house that the Whites live in. By the fire place, in the living room, and in the Whites room. The mood of the Monkey's Paw is eerie, it makes me want to know what's going to happen next, it's very suspenseful, and mysterious. Most of these come from times when they make a wish and the monkeys paw moves or someone see's a figure of an ape. Also because in the book it foreshadows about what might happen to Herbert. This helps me understand the characters more because,I can see that the Whites are a very curious family and want to find out things for themselves. This also helps me with figuring out the plot because when they foreshadow things like, when Herbert saw a ape like face in the fire and a figure, it kind of let me know that something is going to happen to Herbert. The setting made this book, so much better because of how it described the setting and it set a eerie mood which complimented on the story.
the book that i am reading in class is called STOCK IN NEUTRAL. its about a boy who has crebral palsy.the author of this book describes itself like the the boy who has that issue. he also uses a figurative language to givve the reader a better understanding of it. i'm AURA 1st block.

The setting of the book i'm reading in the class room is the "lord of the Flies". The boys are stuck on an island because the plane had crashed near it in the water. So all the boys are stuck on the island and they are haveing to survive the heat and keep eachother away from the bad things that could happen, like hunger, thirst, and animals that could hurt you.
Brittany... period 3. The setting of the book I am reading is their home town in year11.. The book is the fullmetal alchemist series.. the boys, Edward and Alphonse, visit Winry.. That’s all I know so far.
The setting of the book our class as a whole is reading is in Iron River where a Korean family moved to take care of a family buisness.. Chan and his younger sister go to school, and are made fun of... we are on chapter eight..
The setting of the story " is unessisary rufness" its in a small town in iron river, minnasota. The author says the town is realy small and has lots of grass fields all around the small town.
The sitting is in HILL HOUSE.It use english. It is easy ,but sometime I use dictoinary. The mood of story is scary, exciting.Hunting is a good for this story.Because hunting is scary, exciting, and discovering. su p-3
the story we readyn in class takes place in a small town in minessota.it descrives alot.is a mad mood because the guys brother is messing everything for them.By the problems goin on in the story. Jose period 3
The setting of the story "Unecessary Roughness" is in the small town Iron River, Minnasota. The author says that the town is very small and has lots of prerry surronding the town. The mood of the story is sad and frusterating because he doesnt fit in with the other students at his new school and Abogee's brother Bong set them back on some money because of his irresponsiblity for paying rent.
The book im am reading is in a small town in Minnasota. And that the boy is trying to fit at the school. Also he is trying to make his dad proud. Per.3 Jamie
The setting of my book is nessecery Roughness in Minnasota . THe plot is that chang and his family are trying to fit in twi9th the other americans who live in Minnasota. The authors uses descriptions sadness and roughness because the family is going through hard times. This helps me understand that the characters are going through and were they come from. shantay PRD 3
Charly Period 2 The novel we are reading in class is The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe. The setting of this novel is somewhere I think England during the black plague. It is very dark and there is lots of death going on and the characters of the story are locked in the palace trying to escape the “Red Death”. The author uses imagery to convey the setting. For example when he is describing the rooms in the palace, I can clearly picture them in my head. Also when he is describing the uninvited guest it is easy to picture the man with the masque spotted with blood. I think the mood of the story is dark and wary because it’s during the black plague which is where many people died and also wary because of the ebony clock that is ticking. The clock is indicating that someone is going to die and that it is just a matter of time. The setting helps me understand the characters and plot because I can get the gist of how things are in the story it helps me relate to them. The setting helps with the plot because you see can why things happened a certain way because if it was in a different setting then the impact of Prince Prospero and his ball wouldn’t of as much meaning. The mood would also have been different because the setting of the ball being in a locked up castle, and its dark outside and everyone is alone wouldn’t have been as scary if it was on a beach in Hawaii.
The book I’ve been reading in class is called The Truth about Forever by Sarah Dessen. It takes place in the present day and the exact location of this story is a little questionable. Sarah Dessen uses imagery when she describes the lake house that her family owns. The way the house looks when you first pull up to it from the road and how the lake is so calm and peaceful. It makes you want to go to this place if it was actually real. The mood she sets for this story is a little suspenseful because Macy has a boy friend that went to camp and he told her that he wanted to take a break. Then later that night she meets Wes and they soon develop a strong friendship and then start to fall in love. But you don’t know when either of them will admit it. also the mood in this story is a little sad because Macy’s dad died of a heart attack and Macy gets sad and her mother gets sad and overloads herself with work and barely eats. This setting helps me understand the plot because it can show you if the story can only take place in a certain area or if it would change depending the location.
In class we are reading The Masque of the Red Death, the story covers a period of about a half of a year during the Red Death epidemic. The main action takes place in one of Prince Prospero's castellated abbeys. The masque takes place in the abbeys' imperial suite witch consists of seven rooms each with a distinct color scheme. The author (Edgar Allan Poe) uses very descriptive words to help the reader visualize the setting...for example : "There was no light of any kind emanating from lamp or candle within the suit of chambers. But in the corridors that followed the suite, there stood, opposite to each window, a heavy tripod, bearing a brazier of fire that projected its rays through the tinted glass and so glaringly illumined the room." Poe uses such descriptive language that one can imagine the dimly light corridors. The mood of story is fear, but superficially it is of a life of happiness and obliviousness to their downfall until the guest heard the clock chime, then they were reminded of their suppressed feelings of fear, despair, and their inevitable death. The mood helps me understand the characters because it gives insight to the characters life and their personality. For example : Prince Prospero shows his fear of the Red Death by fleeing and bringing some of his close friends to an enclosed quarantine like abby so as to escape the red death.
The setting of the Masque of the Red Death is in the age of castles and knights and in Prince Prospero’s secluded castle-like abbey. The author uses old Italy language and words or phrases from the age of kings, princes, knights, and lords. The language is very proper and articulate. The mood of this story is dark, frightening, and gloomy. This helps me understand how the characters feel when they realize that they cannot escape the plague. It helps me understand the setting more easily because it is described with dark and dreary words. This also helps me understand the plot by allowing me to see that the plague will reach all people and you cannot run or hide from it and how naïve all the wealthy people were to think that they could escape by secluding themselves.
we read the story "The Masque of Red Death" in class recently and i enjoyed it alot. The mood of the story is very eerie, and unsettling, because all along you foreshadow that the Prince, and all of his guests are going to die. the author uses words such as "scarlet blood red" to describe the window in the last room, where people die, to show that blood will be shed. The rooms in the castle were set up, from east to west where they symbolize peoples lives, in the last room, or the black room people meet their destiny and die. furthermore the clock in the story resembles peoples lives fading away, and reminds them that their lives are "ticking" away.
The setting of The Masque of the Red Death is a palace with seven rooms. Moreover, the mood can be described as grim and ghostly. Poe creates this mood by using symbols, like the clock. This all helps me understand the story better because it kind of puts me in the character’s shoes.
The story that we are reading is the “Masque of the Red Death.” The setting of the story takes place in Prince Prospero’s secluded getaway. The place has seven chambers that a masquerade ball is taking place in and these chambers are all different colors and the colors correspond with the tint of the windows. The author uses descriptive language to show the setting and he uses words that also help you figure out the mood of the story like the “scarlet,” “blood-tinted” windows in the last chamber and how he says that when the ebony clock strikes, the revelers are fearful. The mood is lively when the party is going on except when the clock strikes, then the mood gets to be fearful. When the uninvited guest comes, the people want him out and when the prince orders the guest out, he gets angry and rushes the thing and dies. When the prince dies all of the other guests attack when confusion breaks out and then they all die as well and the Red Death is triumphant. These events show the mood turning from gay to haunting and chilling. The masquerade reflects the revelers personalities and the 7th chamber reflects their tomb and their death. Also, the ebony clock represents that time is running out for them as well.

Most interestingly"The Mask of the Red Death" by Edgar A. Poe, takes place during the 1300's, this time corresponding to the introduction of the epidemic Black Death throughout Europe. This story takes place in England, were the streets are desolated and the environment is so heavy, due to desease and death, it is almost palpable. On the opposite, inside the castle, the elite group is having a great time, alienated from reality and celebrating life.Poe uses descriptibe words throught out the story and incorporates several symbols also, such as the clock symbolizing the amount of time left of the character's life that night. The mood of the story is gloomy, eerie and suspenful, the little use of dialogue is strong due to the focus of discription of the people and environment.
The setting of “The Masque of the Red Death” is in Prince Prospero’s suites, and most of the time it is at a party. The author uses creepy and eerie types of language to help the reader visualize the setting . The mood of the story is exactly that; creepy and eerie. The author sets an uneasy mood in the author knowing that there is a deadly plague just outside the walls of this palace. This mood helps me understand the characters and the plot, because since the mood is creep and suspenseful, I know that the revels are ignorant, oblivious, and uncaring. It also helps me to understand the plot, because if the mood were any different I might have gotten confused with what was going on, or what was going to happen in the story.
The setting of the book "Stuck in Neutral" takes thought the eyes of Shawn. Since the book is in first person the story is what Shawn see's and hears and since he can't control his eyes you have to look at the different settings through what he is seeing.
The setting of the story The Masque of the Red Death is in the 1300s when the Black Death was killing people left and right. The actual place of the events was in a palace with many different rooms, some of them joyful and others dark and scary. The mood of the story is mysterious the author talks about many different colors and emotions that the objects and characters have. This helps you visualize the scenes in your head.
The death setting of The Mask of Red Death is in prince Prospero's palace during the plague epidemic. Everyone invited did not have the plague. The big ball room with the 7 rooms that are all shut away give the story a gloomy mood. The story itself is terrifying.
The story I read in class, the Masque of the Red Death, is set possibly in the 1800's (during the authors' lifetime) and is based on the actual plague of the Black Death. The black Death occurred in the 1300's however, this story may be based in this time period or his, within Europe.
The setting for the novel i am reading in class, Brians Winter, is in the remote the woods of canada. The auther uses very descriptive language to help you visualize the setting. The mood of the story is a little depressing because Brian has to live alone for so long. This helps me understand Brian and his actions as well as the plot because it explains why he does certain things and why certain things happen. Daniel per 7
The setting of the Masque of Red Death is in the palace. The mood of this story was creepy, and actually made me a little scared. The author gives descriptive words to describe all of the seven apartments. The words and descriptions the author gives helps me visualize the story and actually see in my mind what is going on. Taylor Pd.7
The Masque of the Red death took place in a palace. The palace had 7 different room all of different colors. None of the rooms looked into eachother but they were all connected by one hall way. The author of this story used descriptive language to help visualize what is happening in the story. The author described the rooms and everything in the rooms very vividly. The mood of this story was kind of creepy because everyone was dying and they all thought they were dying of the plauge. It was also one of the stories that I couldn't really predict what was going to happen next like I didn't think the prince was going to be killed. I think the setting helped this story have that creepy vibe.
Well my story doesnt really have a setting. It mostly takes place in side his own mind. Shawn doesn't really talk about his surroundings because he can't always focus on them enough to describe them.
Charly, i agree. IF the story was set in say, hawaii, it would have been alot less eerie, and you would not have had the fear instilled in you. the rooms colors, as well as symbols such as the clock symbolize that death is inevitable, no matter how luxurious your life is.
I am reading the book Stuck in Neutral and the whole book is basically what the kid Shawn is/was thinking. Shawn says things the way he sees it and just wishes people really knew that he understands them. I understand the character Shawn and his family.
Mirialys per. 2 I agree with Samantha and Charly in the short story "The Masque of The Red Death" the setting is very important. If the story were to take place in a different place such as Cancun nothing would match. There would not be a plague hence no party. The time in which the story takes place is also very important. If it took place in the present there wouldn't be a king Prospero and the people would talk differently. The story wouldn't be as scary. If the story took place in Cancun there wouldn't be misery or suspense. You would have to change the name of the story to the masque of the red life instead of death just because people wouldn't be dieing and things like that.
I could relate to the book Stock and neutral with the book im reading stone and spaz because they both deal with a boy with cerebral palsy. Shantay prd 3
Joey the book is more then just grass feilds it is a small town with lots of people and nice lake. But the main two characters are haveing trouble getting new friends.
Charly i agree with you. Hawaii doesn't seem like the place that would be eerie. if it was set in Hawaii it would make the story feel a little less horrid and the scenery would probably take the edge of death off of your mind.
Charles period 2. The setting for the book we are reading in class is in England during the black plauge. It takes place in Prince Prospero's palace. He has invited all his friends to come celebrate a party at his palace. It sets kind of a tence mood for the story because of the things that are happening outside of the palace. The reason for the party is to take everyone's mind off the plauge. The use of his words help me understand what is going on and how people are feeling.
The book we are currently reading and discussing is "the masque of the red death." It take place in the dark ages in europe! In london there is this castle owned by the prince Prospero. This castle contains 7 rooms. Each room is colored differently! This affects the reader because one room is red and it provokes fear in the reader. Overall the setting definatly effected me in terms of the mood. Ismael Sandoval period 2
Response to Sam p2. I agree with you, the fact that the story takes place during an epidemic intensifies the environmnet, the smell of the dead and the look the city has while the is disease roaming around are other details Poe uses to describe the setting.Poe's use of symbols, as Sam has mentioned, do truly create a deeper meaning to the entire story and tie in with the theme that no one can escape death, not even the wealthiest in the city, such as Prince Prospero.
The setting of the novel I am reading in class is at a boarding school on the east coast up north. The author portrays this by saying the location, and also by talking about what the students are wearing and how they always complain about how cold it is. The mood is decietful, scandalous, and untrusting. This helps understand the characters and the plot by showing the atmosphere the characters are in.
Sara, your description of the story is very good and I like how you included what Poe said in his story into your description. You seem to have a good understanding of the setting of the story. Also, you have made connections to the certain elements that Poe brings to light like the clock and the reason for the masquerade. Overall, well done.
I agree with Mirialys on agreeing with Charly and Samantha because if the story took place in modern time there would have been a cure for the plague. Furthermore, if the setting was at the beach in Cancun the mood would not have been grim. Also if it did not take place in a, what they thought, secure place the outside people could of entered more easily.
Sarah, I agree with you that the ebony clock represents the idea that time is running out for the party guest, but i think that the guest are worried when they hear it because they know that they cant avoid the red death forever. In my opinion i think that the descriptive language that poe uses is perfect for the eerie and unsettling mood of the story and without that type of detailed language the story would be subpar. Sara Andersen pd.2
I agree with Charly about the story "the masque of the red death". The setting played a very important role in the mood of the story. The story would of been a lot less uncanny if the setting wasn't as 'dark'. I was able to picture the dark, mysterious rooms and how the characters felt in them. From all this you could fully understand how the characters felt and how scared they must've been. Jonathan Waters - P.2
The stting of the story I am reading in class is in a small town in some sort of library. It is cold and stormy outside and have a big fire keeping them warm. The setting sort of affects the story because it gives it a creepy feeling. The story I a reading is the Monkey's Paw. The time period this story takes place is probably back in England before electricity was used do to them using candle lit lanterns James Lane. period 3
Charly, I agree with you and your sister and whoever else has commented on you. If The Masque Of Red Death was set in Hawaii, or perhaps anywhere other than the dark room, it would not be as eerie and ominous. The setting of the story was full of suspense because I could not tell what the black room was for, until the dark figure appeared in that room and the story ended. Without the black room the story would not be the same. And of course, the story would not be the same in Hawaii.
I like how you pointed out the visual picture that the other paints for the reader. I agree that the author tries to paint a visual to create the mood and feeling of the story.
Also Ashley A. :
Your book setting sounds really nice. I love peaceful, quaint, beautiful nature settings. I admire people that honestly appreciate simple things, because many people don't. I could see how this setting contributes a lot to the understanding of the characters view on life etc.
I agree with Ben Ignacio on his blog about the Monkeys Paw. When I read that story in class I was eager to find out what happened next, like Ben. The house in which the story took place in was very mysterious and dark. The author of the Monkeys Paw uses language that allows the readers to immerse themselves in the scary story. For example when the story begins the author describes the house in which the characters are in as one that is ”off the beaten path”, dark, and also has it snowing. As Ben said the author uses foreshadowing which does in turn help you understand the characters. The setting and characters give this story a mysterious, sneaky, and sad mood.
I also agree with you Charly. The setting of this story does add a somewhat dark mood, and Poe's use of imagery is impeccable. I must add though, that the setting also affects the characters in "The Masque of Red Death". Especially since the party is similar to masquerade. This setting adds a sense of "negligence" ( everyone is wearing masks ). The characters seem to ignore the plague, but it is still present.
I agree with Charly, that if the story had taken place on a beach in Hawaii that it probablly would of been a much more "cheery" story. The setting for "The Masque of the Red Death" really does set the "mood" of the story; it's dark and eerie, which makes it fit for a story about the black plague.
Hi Heyley i think that stuck in nutral sounds really weird in a way because he dosent know whats going on around him creepy.lol but i think that book would probley have me so confused but it sounds really cool and interesting and creepy...
The book I am reading is set in New Jersey. The authour describes it as a suburban setting. Margret lives a big neighborhood. She desribes that there are alot of houses and kids around so that means to me that it is a good place for kids. It gives me a better visual in my head about how it looks and what poeple might be around.
I agree with you on the setting of this novel that we have just read in class. The author does foreshadow death and something bad happening with his eerie and descriptive yet dark words. I think that we knew that the characters would die in the end of the story somehow because of the plt that was created.
Charly Period 2 I agree with you Mirialys becasue I also thought that the story was scary. I also agree with you on the fact that the seven rooms made the story eerie and creepy. Hopefully we won't have to read any more Edgar Allen Poe stories because they are all scary and sinister.
I agree with Estaban, the mood is very depressing and grim. The use of imagery through the ebony clock is very good, when it hits the hour time just stops for the people in the palace. The things that he describes really makes me think that I'm in the palace chilling while there's death and horrible things happening right outside. The palace with seven rooms with different colors for each, especially the black seventh room, makes me think that death is going to come to the partiers in the palace. James Lane period 2
I think its cool how you related the story to the plague. I didn't even think about that but it makes a lot of sense. Also, the contrast of the rich and poor relate in both the story and the reality of that time. I agree with the clock symbolizing time and how much time is left until the guests' deaths. The mood is very gloomy and eerie, and I think that Poe uses great descriptive language.
Charly, You are so right about the author using imagery to show and convey the setting. The setting must take place in Europe because they have castles, and like you said the plague was going around as well. I agree with you and think it is England too. During the story I see how it is dark and there is death, but think about the other rooms too. Otherwise I agree with you about how the setting is. Taylor Pd. 7
Your book seems really interesting. I would love to read it! It's kind of wierd that she would take perscriptions to change her personality. What is this book called? I want to read it!
The setting of "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks, is in North Carolina, a few years after WWII ended. The author describes the settings as being calm and peaceful, if he hadn't you would've gotten a different "vibe" from the story, and the relationship between Noah and Allie wouldn't have been as magical. When he describes the water, and the sunsets you can picture it very clearly, and you can feel a similar emotion that the character does. If the author had changed the setting the story might not have been as special, or peaceful as it is. The setting was a very important thread in this book.
The novel we just read in class is called the Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe. It is set around England in the old times. The author uses language that describes a dark, eerie, treacherous time. The words make me visualize death and hardship. The mood of this novel goes along with the setting, because it is also dark and eerie. The mood and setting help me understand the characters and plot by giving me an image of the story in my head.
I agree with Ashley (period 2). I love the book The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. The setting of the book does help you understand the characters as well and the plot. I like the words she used to describe the book because they are a perfect description of the carefree life Noah and Allie lived. I completely agree that the setting of this book it what makes it so great.
Ismael period 2. I fully agree with Michaela when she states that the mood is dark, frightening, and gloomy. The rooms are the objects that promote this the best. I also agree that the writing style that the author uses helps the mood also. Furthermore i also understand when the victims cannot escape the black plaugue.
The setting for the story we've read in class, The Mask of Red Death, is I believe somewhere in England. More specifically the story was set in Prince Prospero's dark castle, it had seven rooms, each painted in different colors.
I completely agree with what you mentioned about the setting in Hawaii, if it was set there, it wouldn't be nearly as ominous as the dark room is. I also think that the Mask of Red Death was in England, because we mostly hear about the plague in England, so context clues help us reach that verdict.
I agree with Ismael, p.2 about the setting of "the Masque of the Red Death" In the story the rooms are different colors and that does provoke a seperate mood within each room. For example the room with blue all over made the reader think calm, and peaceful. However, the room which contained black and cast a red blood-like glow did NOT provoke any type of calm thought. I thought that was a very noticeable feature within the story.
The short story that we were reading in our class, "The Masque of The Red Death" by Edgar Allen Poe. It takes place in England, during the black plague.
The setting of the story "Unecessary Roughness" is in the small town Iron River, Minnasota. The author says that the town is very small and has lots of prerry surronding the town. The mood of the story is sad and frusterating because he doesnt fit in with the other students at his new school and Abogee's brother Bong set them back on some money because of his irresponsiblity for paying rent.
the setting of the book i am reading takes place in a rainy town in 'washington called Forks. The author ofn this book uses very discriptive words that just instantly make you picture what the author is talking about. The mood of this story is pretty calm at the beginning towards the end it changes and it becomes a little violent. This helps me understand the charachters more because i feel and know what they're going through.
The book that i have been reading in class is an SAT prep book, so there isnt really any setting to it. While i am reading it i can picture myself in a "class room" taking the test or studying for it. Steph per7
the setting for the novel i read in class is the mideal times at a castle and they are throwing a party. the author uses very descriptvie writing witch helps me understand it better. the mood of the stoy is dark and happy at the same time.it helps me understand the plot because i can picture it in my head.
The story, "Masque of the Red Death" is set sometime in the middle ages. It is set at a prince's castle, during an outbreak of the plague. The author uses imagery to help describe the setting. I think that the mood of this story is dark, beacuse the plague is setting a very dark tone and then it becomes spooky when the author describes the last room. It helps me understand the charachters and the plot better because it gives you an idea of what is on their mind during this time. Matt period 7
The setting for the book that we are reading in class is very dark.It was written by Edger Allan Poe,and takes place in a midevil castle. The book is weird because it is eerrie but yet still happy at the same time. One example of it being eerrie would be the mysterious room at the end of the hall and the man with the mask. But it was happy because they had a big party.I agree with Charly in peroid two that the author does use imagery language.Emily Hiller p.7
The book that I was reading in class is The Masque of the Red death. The setting takes place in a big palace where everyone is gathered to escape the disease. The author used Imagery to help us visualize the setting. An example would be when he was describing all the different colored rooms in the palace. The mood of the story is Death because cleary everyone is trying to escape it. This helps us understand why the people are all locked up in the palace and why they are scared.
The short story, "The Masque of the Red Death" was set in the middle ages, when plague spread around and was killing many people. It was a masque in a prince's castle. The author uses very descriptive language to help visualize the setting. The mood at the beginning of the story is happy and calm, while at the end it is scared and hectic. This helps me understand the characters because it helps me understand why they did what they did. It helps me understand the plot because the mood adds suspense to the plot.
The Setting of the masque of the red death is about the black plauge that swept the europen nation and how the prince is a selfish selfcenterd ruler who couldn't care less about his peopel as long as he and his close healthy friends are not attackd by the diesease. And it takes place in a beautiful palace with 7 diffrent rooms. All of which are artistically decorated to set the mood.
Estabon, I agree with you. The symbols he uses just like he does in his other stories help make you feel like you are in the characters shoes. The symbol of the clock shows you how long you have to live. All these symbols contribute to the mood.
The setting for the novel I'm reading in class, "New Moon" by Stephenie Meyer, is in Forks, Washington. It takes place in Modern times. The author explains that the setting is quiet, small, and lonely. Not many people live there and it can be boring. She explains how their's a lot of trees and forests, and it's rainy all the time. The mood of the story is sort of sad and deppressing in the beginning because that's how the character feels. Then it gets to be more exciting and nerve wracking and it makes you anxious. It helps me understand the characters and the plot because it shows that most of the characters don't seem to have a very exciting life so any tiny exciting thing that happens gets everybody interested. It also shows me that the main character is very different than everyone else. She finds so much excitement and unexpected things in the little town that most other people wouldn't. A lot of exciting things happen to her, but only her. It helps me understand the plot because there are many things that would make the story different if the setting was different. For example, the vampires can't go out when it's sunny, and the story says that Forks is the most rainy place in the continental US. Therefore, they couldn't live somewhere where it was sunny all the time because they wouldn't be able to go outside.
The setting of "Stuck in Neutral," is in Seattle, Washington. It is also a young boy with cerebral palsy whom tells the story which makes the point of view first person. The point of view helps me understand the characters much better than if they were told by anyone else. This is because he is unable to communicate, so he knows everyone very well unfortunately no one really knows who he is and what he thinks. I believe the mood of this novel to be curious mostly because it was curiosity that kept me reading to see what would happen and to see if Shawn's father would kill him.

The novel we are reading in class is The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe.

The author (Edgar Allan Poe) uses very descriptive words to help the reader visualize the setting...for example :
"There was no light of any kind emanating from lamp or candle within the suit of chambers. But in the corridors that followed the suite, there stood, opposite to each window, a heavy tripod, bearing a brazier of fire that projected its rays through the tinted glass and so glaringly illumined the room."
Poe uses such descriptive language that one can imagine the dimly light corridors.
Sara A. Period 2
Michaela Walters Period 2
we read the story "The Masque of Red Death" in class recently and i enjoyed it alot.

I agree with Samantha and Charly in the short story "The Masque of The Red Death" the setting is very important.

I agree with Mirialys on agreeing with Charly and Samantha because if the story took place in modern time there would have been a cure for the plague. Sarah,
I agree with you that the ebony clock represents the idea that time is running out for the party guest, but i think that the guest are worried when they hear it because they know that they cant avoid the red death forever. In my opinion i think that the descriptive language that poe uses is perfect for the eerie and unsettling mood of the story and without that type of detailed language the story would be subpar.

If The Masque Of Red Death was set in Hawaii, or perhaps anywhere other than the dark room, it would not be as eerie and ominous. I agree with Estaban, the mood is very depressing and grim. The use of imagery through the ebony clock is very good, when it hits the hour time just stops for the people in the palace. The things that he describes really makes me think that I'm in the palace chilling while there's death and horrible things happening right outside. Re: Charly
I completely agree with what you mentioned about the setting in Hawaii, if it was set there, it wouldn't be nearly as ominous as the dark room is. I also think that the Mask of Red Death was in England, because we mostly hear about the plague in England, so context clues help us reach that verdict.

I agree with Ismael, p.2 about the setting of "the Masque of the Red Death"
In the story the rooms are different colors and that does provoke a seperate mood within each room.

Steph per7

Estabon,
I agree with you.

The setting of my story is the dark allys, garbages on the floor, dark places and gloomy feelings or scary and serious. The setting of my story gives the feeling of how it's like to be in the gang.
