The main idea of "Things Fall Apart" is showing that the things people may think are important, may not turn out to be so important. For instance, when Ikwonkow thinks that being brave or "manly" is important, it turns on him when he kills his son. If he didn't have the need to show his tough side then he might have been able to prevent killing his son.
As Karma hits Okonkwo where it most hurts, his glory and pride, and as he is banished from his clan, he is forced to move into his motherland, where he begins a new life with a whole new meaning. This is the main idea of page 107.In this page, we are told the story of Okonkwo's arrival at his motherland. The nararator nutraly describes Okonkwo, as a man "who was taking his family of three wives and their children to seek refuge in his motherland." Furthemore; we are able to conclude that Okonkwo is beginning a new life due to the fact that when he arrives at his mother land he has nothing and so.."he is given a plot of ground on which to build his compound, and two pieces of land on which to farm."
The main idea of the elders speech at the end of chapter 19, pgs 138-139, is basically how their traditions and culture is in jeporady due to the invasive religion of the Europeans.
The main idea of this story is the struggle that the main character, Okonkwo, is having with himself and his ego. He wants to rise above his father because he believes that his father was a failure in life. Okonkwo wants to show himself and others that he is an almighty man who has great power and authority and he has worked hard to attain this. An example of Okonkwo being egotistical is when he is summoned to kill his “son” Ikemefuna. He could have resisted and not killed the boy, but he decided to show that he was a powerful man and continued with the murder. Another main idea that is incorporated with Okonkwo’s masculinity problem is the struggle with change and tradition. Okonkwo wants to live by his communities traditions as does his community; therefore, he tries to use his power to run the change out of his community, the change being the missionaries and the new religion.
For the past month and a half, we have been reading Things Fall Apart, as a class. During our socratic seminar we discussed different main ideas. But I do believe the title speaks for itself. I think the main idea of this book is everything and anything can, or will fall apart. Like a domino effect for example, once one falls, the rest fall shortly after. And in a result of falling apart, you grow as a person, learn to face the inevitable.
The main idea of this paragraph is to show what the people of the tribe thought of the new missionaries. This is the main idea because the Ibo people don't think that these missionaries will last long because they say in the book that the "white man's god would not last...". The Ibo people's belief is that their own gods are stronger than the white man's god therefore they think the white people will not be around much longer. Also the people feel that the missionaries beliefs aren't anything because in the book it says that most of their converts are "efulefu" people, which are worthless people. Lastly the people don't respect the missionaries because they say that "Agbala, called the converts the excrement of the clan,..." This shows that these people were not regarded highly because if you respected someone you wouldn't call them excrement.
Mirialys per.2 I believe that the Main Idea of "Things fall Apart" is that luck changes. That you might be well off and nothing is going wrong and then one day "bam." I think that is why the title has the title is does, because Okonkwo has all this luck and then accidentally kills someone and he is banished from his village for 7 years. Most people think that he had it easy but Okonkwo worked hard to achieve everything that he had it was just destroyed. He had luck(not that he got everything because of karma and luck) and lost it all. In the beginning of the book (p.g 3 and most of the first chapter) we see all of his accomplishments and then into the story they mean nothing because everything turns on him.
The main idea from the novel "Things Fall Apart" is that a good thing, such as the cummunity Okonkwo lives in, can go bad very quickly in very sudden ways, Okonkwo accidently killing a 16 year old while shooting off a gun. At the funeral of a fallen tribesman, there were people shooting off guns in honor of the deceased. Okonkwo, while attempting to fire had the gun blow up and kill the person next to him, turning out to be the deceased' 16 year old son. for killing him, a tribesman, no matter if it was accident or on purpose, Okonkwo was exiled from his village, not allowed to come back for 7 years. while away they burned his properties and killed his animals. As you see, things can really "fall apart" very suddenly. James L period 2
In the book Things Fall Apart, I thought that the main idea was how there were many different ways to interpret masculinity. In the very beginning of the book it started out with Okonkwo's father and described him as a lazy father and even at times called a woman. Okonkwo experienced this and decided that he did not ever want to be like his father. In Okonkwo's mind he associated masculinity with anger, in that belief the only emotion he thought he should express was anger. Obierika was a a very masculine man, just in a different way. He was a man of reason and he thought about his actions. Then when he was exiled, so he went to his mothersland with his other kinsmen. In this tribe they were less warlike and fierce like Okonkwo's tribe Umuofia. Here he was calmed down, almost pacified by his uncle Uchendu.
After reading Things Fall Apart, I would have to say that one of the main ideas is staying true to yourself, and your beliefs. Okwonkwo is debating whether or not to accept his son and his new religion, or be stubborn and stick to his old ways. The same condition goes for the other people in the community debating whether or not to convert.
Another main idea is change. Change in the world affects the people of the Ibo people very much. Without the missionaries, the people of the village might be living the same life that they used to, without all the controversy.
Also, personal changes such as family problems and communal events in the village challenge and affect the Ibo people's beliefs, traditions, and lifestyles. Change is what makes things fall apart in this story.
The main idea in Things Fall Apart is how cultures can clash, and not coexists without conflict. When the white men come into the Ibo society they destroy there culture. These two cultures the African and European cannot exist together peacefully. They are completely different and when the white men try to change their society things start to fall apart.
The main idea for Things Fall Apart is how change in a culture can bring tension. This is shown when the Christian missionaries come to the Ibo tribe and try to change the ways of the Ibo. Ikonkwo and the rest of the tribe don't like this forced change and have a negative attitude towards the missionaries.
I think the main idea is that two very different cultures can't really co-exist. That the white man destroyed their culture. The Africans and the Western Europeans had very different cultures and it would be hard for them to live side by side without conflict. The African's culture was, in my opinion, barbaric but that doesn't necessarily make it better but it was definitely a whole lot different than the White man's.
The white man came to Africa and destroyed the culture, because the 2 cultures did not easily co-exist who out conflict; due to the fact that they are both so different. It doesn't really say that tradition is better there, but they had alot of "barbaric" traditions. When Okonkwo murdered the boy and the execution are examples that show the white man caused his life to be destroyed and his tribe to fall apart...."Things Fall Apart".
In the novel Things Fall Apart there are several themes and main ideas expressed. A specific example is chapter is visible in chapter sixteen when the christian missionaries have really begun to have a profound affect upon the Ibo people. The book shows the reaction of a particular man, Okonkwo, and that of his close friends and family. In a way the village is steadily spiraling downwards from such dramatic cultural shifts, and less obvious is the changes specific to families; such as Nwoye leaving his own family, Okonkwo's family, to join the missionaries, and almost to rebel against his father. Moreover i believe the main idea expressed is implied in the title; Things Fall Apart.
The main idea from Chapter 7 of Things Fall Apart is that Okonkwo wants to prove that he is not weak and that he shows no emotions and will do whatever it takes to be the strongest emotionally and physically. He shows his strength by killing his "son" Ikemefuna. He didn't want to look like he was weak so he killed him, but afterwards he felt guilty and deppressed. The main idea is that he will hurt anyone no matter what to show that nothing bothers him and that he doesn't let his emotions get the best of him. This main idea is shown on pages 52 and 53.
I think the main idea of this story is about how you can be big and respected but in an instant your life can change and you can be looked down upon by people. An example of this is when okonkwo lived in the Ibo he was respected and very powerful. People listened and looked up to him. But in an instant when his gun exploded his life changed and he was banished from the clan. Now he is not looked up to, but rather looks up to his uncle.
The main idea in chapter 7 of Things Fall Apart is that Okonkwo wants to prove that he is the strongest. He shows that he does not let his emotions get the best of him, by killing his son, Ikemefuna. He wants to show himself and everybody else that he has the most willpower and do whatever it takes to make his point, and make it known that he IS the strongest, both emotionally and physically.
The main idea of Things Fall Apart in Chapter 7 is Okonkwo proving to himself and his peers that he is the strongest and has the most power. We know this becasue he kills his son when he was told that he shouldn't. He thinks that everyone would see him as week if he were to nothing. This inner struggle of having power and showing no fear has follwed Okonkwo thoughout his life. He will do what ever is nessary to prove his point.
The main idea to the book we're reading in class is that no matter how together a society is that things will slip through the cracks and that things do indeed fall apart. Like when Okonkwo takes apart in the death of Ikemefuna, his life soon falls apart. After the death of Ikemefuna Okonkow accidently kills another boy and he is exiled from his village of Umofia for 7 years. so basically things do fall apart.
The main idea to me is to show how things really do fall apart in a person life, in this case okonkwo. Okonkwo starts out all high and mighty and has a huge ego and is resptected amongst the Ibo people in his village. Okonkwo's life then does a major 360 degree turn and everything slowly collapses in his life and finally fals apart and is forced to leave his village.
Rocket Boys, the main idea of the first chapter is the setting. It talks about where the story takes place. Homer talks about where he grew up and how it was a coal mine town. The first chapter gets you set up for the story. Sky.period 1
The main idea of "things fall apart" is what comes around goes aroung.Okonkow has a problem with self pride he whant to leave a lasting impact on his community not like his father. Okonkow is rude to everyone including his wife and kids. When the tables turn Okonkows hold town turns on him after he kills someone on accident. He and his family then are kicked out of town.
One of the main ideas of the novel Things Fall Apart is that Okonkwo has everything going for him and is very important in his community and then hes luck ended. He worked so hard for his entire life to get where he was and then everything was suddenly taken away. He was banished from his village for 7 years. This shows that luck is not always on your side. In the first pages we see his accomplishments and then throughout the book we see how things fall apart.
The main idea of "Things Fall Apart" is the struggle and problems Okonkwo, the main character faces along with the people of African clans/society. As the title states, "things begin to fall apart" when Okonkwo is kicked out of his clan, and has to move his family to a different place. As he arrives to the new society, the white men begin to come and express new ideas and religion to the people. This confuses the Africans, and the clan begins to fall apart. The supporting details is the white men, a new start for Okonkwo, and the beginning of clans disaster.
The main idea of the novel that we are reading in class, Things Fall Apart, is how even though things seem to be going well for youthat never means that it is permanent. This is shown throughout the novel. In the beginning of the story the main character, Okonkwo, has everything that he could ever want. He worked very hard to get there too. He later lose nearly everything he has obtained over the years and is banished from the community he is thiugh so highly in. This story is a very good example of hoe circumstances can always change for either the better or the worst.
The main idea of Things Fall Apart is the struggle and karma that the main character Okonkwo has to deal with. This especially affects his ego. After intentionally killing his son, he gets punished after, for killing a boy in accident. A series of unfortunate events follow after, further proving karma is against him. He ego is too big, and he needs to learn his lesson.
The main idea of true first part of things fall apart is very interesting. It is that after doing bad things bad things are bound to come back to you kind of like charma. This is shown when his son is killed and later when he was exiled to another place. This certainly changed okonkwos view on his life. Ismael period one
The main idea of "things fall apart" is that the things people may think arw important, may not turn out to be important. Like when Okonkwo thought it was a big deal to kill his son because he needed the street cred, but it just ened up hurting himself inside. Casey Per.2
the main idea of "chasing the falconers" is that meg and aiden are trying to out run the law. There parents have been mistaked for a bad crime that they didnt do and the kids were put in the shelter. meg and aiden escape and try to free there parents scince they have done nothing wrong.
jose R. period 3 THis book talks about a boy named peak.He has a aditud problem and he don't like his name.he goes to school and has alot of friends.he is always having problems with some of hes teachers.
the main ideao of uglies is that at the age of 16 you can have a surgery done and you will be pretty.when you get to be pretty you get to go to pretty tonw and you get to go to partys and have the perfect but tally ins't sure that she wanst to become pretty because everything will change for her so she has to decide wheather she wants to be pretty or ugly!!!!!
The main idea of "Impulse" is that three kids go to an insane asylum for different things. Vannesa goes there for cutting herself. Tony goes there for trying to shoot himself in the chest. Conner goes there for freaking out cause of drugs. So therefore don't try to kill yourself, cut yourself, or do intense drugs.
In touching spirit bear it is about a kid named cole. He beats up a kid named peter drical because he told on him for robbing a hardware store. And is sent yo an isolate disland off the coast of alaska. All he has is a wooden shack to sleep in. And was attacked by a bear a few weeks later. It was a white bear and cole knew that there was no polar bears in Alaska. and met his parole officer and his name was edwin. he was a leader of a local tribe called the tlinglet tribe. And he thought that all the spirit bear s were hunted down but they wernt. per. 3 joey
I'm reading New Moon..I only half way through the book because its not as good as the first one; in other wods, it pretty boring. The main idea of the book is that Edward left Forks because he didn't want to hurt Bella: Bella goes throuhg the depression stage, and then starts talking to Jacob, Jacob talks about a group of people that he is kinda sorta afraid of, Bella offers to run wawy with him and he says no.
Meanwhile, Charlie talks about wolf sightings...
Jacob gets suddenly sick, but doesn't know why, stops talking to Bella.. and thats were I stopped reading because I got really bored with the book.
the main idea of street love is how a boynamed juice likes this one girl and damien is trying to take her away from him and then juice starts to do bad stuff.
The main idea of "A Child Called It " is about a kid that is tortured, because his mom hits him every time he gets to the house. For instance, everytime he's eating or mainly doing anything in the house he gets hit until he has a bunch of bruises. Another thing his mom does to him is tell him awful things about himself, things i can't say here. Last but not least his mom hurts his emotions because of all the bad things that she tells him. alex c period-3
Erik N.per 3 The main idea of my favorite poem in "Street Love" is that Daminan is expresing his love for Junice but she does not respond in any way because she as been hurt many times before. Walter Dean Myers uses the ringing of the phone as a chance for her to reply, but she does not take that chance because she as heard it all befor so lets the phone ring. Daminan trys again but the phone rings and eventually there is no answer.
The book i am reading is "First part last". And what the main idea of this book that i have read so far is that a boy has just turned 16 and on his 16th birthday he found out that his girlfriend was pregnant. So now he has to figure out what he should do with that situation.
Lisa, I agree with you when you said that things falling apart is inevitable. Things can go wrong at any moment, just like in Things Fall Apart. People can't avoid everything. But we can all try.
Lisa, I agree with you. The example of a domino effect is perfect to describe the situation that is going on in this book. For Okonkwo, one thing goes wrong and then another and another due to his poor choices, like dominoes.
I don't agree with Estaban, because that's not the main idea of the book and the main idea of the book is the different ways masculinity is viewed in my opinion. Not that their culture and traditions are in jeopardy due to the Europeans.
I completely agree with you. Great things can only last for long. In Okonkwo's case, his prosperous life in Umuofia is put to an end, due to his on mistakes. I also agree that this book is a great example of how thigs change, for better or for worse.
Ashley A. I agree with you're 3 points. I agree most with change. If cultures didn't experience change there would not be the diversity and advancements that we see today. Without the missionaries the Ibo people wouldn't see different perspectives and views. Things need to change and advance. If their culture tried to eliminate the missionaries and isolated themselves completely they wouldn't be able to obtain new ideas. So change is a big main idea in "Things Fall Apart".
I also agree with lisa. The domino effect fits the book "Things fall Apart" perfectly. After one domino falls all the other fall. In the book Okonkwo falls but learns and he keeps trying. He is still able to maintain his family which all rely on.
Ashley A, I agree with you when you say that the main idea is that change makes things fall apart. With out change, the Ibo tribe would live how it had for thousands of years. But when the missionaries come, with a whole new faith and beliefs, everything seems to change. Families seperate, and people are killed. If nothing changed this book would not have been written, which is why this is the mian idea.
I liked Michaela’s interpretation of the main idea. I like the way she describes Okonkwo as troubled and wants to always be the strong and brave because he is afraid of being seen as weak. The example of how he killed the boy points out this perfectly because he wanted to show everyone else that he didn’t feel emotion. In reality he did feel for Ikemefuna and I believe he regretted his decision. I also think that once he felt the remorse which in return he felt even weaker. This whole book he’s trying to be everything his father was not but in reality he is turning out worse then his father, even weaker then him.
Michaela, I agree with your opinion that the main idea of "Things Fall Apart" is the struggle between Okonkwo and himself. I think that the example you used was very true, and it is a good example. Okonkwo never wants to show weakness, only strength. I also believe you have a strong point where you say there is another hidden main idea. Marena P2
I liked how Michaela involved main ideas from other parts of the book. However, I do believe that she should have mentioned how societies in African society is falling apart. The story is not just about Okonkwo and the problems he faces. She did a good job explaining why okonkowo was exiled and attempts to be better than his father. Taylor period 7
I agree with christina. I think that the main ideA is that when one thing is important to one person it might not be important to others. Holly period 7
I agree with christina that people may think that everything revolves around them, but in reality its not that way.Another example is how Ikonkow doesnt respect the week of peace and beats his wife. He is showing then that he doesnt care what happens to the other tribe members as a punishment from the gods.
Ben, I disagree with you because I don't think that masculinity and anger are the main idea of the story. It is a major concern in the book, and it makes Okwonkwo how he is, but it's not the main idea. I agree with the idea that some other people said though, about Okwonkwo letting his want to be strong and masculine overcome what is important.
I strongly agree with Christina from period 2. Your right about Okonkwo's luster for respect and power being his downfall. This same type of mentality is seen today umong society and is hindering the ablity for people to be themslves.
Dani, I agree with you that Okonkwo has alot of good fortune and then loses it. I think that luck is a two way street, being that is can help or hurt a situation. Unfortunately for Okonkwo's good luck seems to dry up and keep putting him in bad situations. Sara A. pd 2.
I agree with Christina because Okonkow could have gone about his intenitons differently. I mean seriously he shouldn't have killed himself. If he was so caught up in trying to prove himself then Ikemefuna nuight not have been kileed. Shelby per. 2
I think Christina is right when she says that Okonkwo could have stopped himself from killing Ikemefuna. If he had not been so consumed with attaining great power and respect from his clansmen, he would not have killed his son in order to prove he was strong. His actions eventually lead to his down fall and "things falling apart" in the novel in my opinion.
I agree with Christina when she says that the main idea of "Things Fall Apart" is showing that the things people may think are important, may not turnout to be so important to other people. When the Ibo people had the town meeting about going the war with the white people to drive them out, a messanger came, from the whites, and Okonkwo killed him. He then was hoping to spark something up with the tribe and make them want to kick these intruders, but instead the exact opposite happened. The people of his tribe were unwilling to war with them, going against everything Okonkwo believed in. James L period 2
The main idea in my class reading that im reading about is rocket boys. So far its about a boy named Homer who wants to succeed in building a rocket but he fail and people are making fun of him. Also his dad does not believ in him doin it.
The main idea of "Things Fall Apart" is that cultures may clash but you have to deal with problems as they come to you. Okonkwo did not know how to handle his problems, and he consistently had a bad approach. One thing leads to another in this book, and eventually everything that he knows of falls apart.
-Annabelle B. period 2 I know I responded to this on time, but my comment is not there... so I am redoing it :/
I completely agree with Christina Genet. I think his ego, and Okonkwo being so concerned with being manly really holds him back. I think lots of men are like that, feeling that they need to prove to the world their manliness. Most of the time all it takes is some sensitivity, humility, and compromise and I think the men in the world could make it a better place.
-Annabelle B. period 2 (response to a friend) I know is late.. thought we didn't have to do it . Hope I can get some credit for it!

Daniel period 7

Shelby Per. 2

Wyatt
The main idea of true first part of things fall apart is very interesting. It is that after doing bad things bad things are bound to come back to you kind of like charma. This is shown when his son is killed and later when he was exiled to another place. This certainly changed okonkwos view on his life.
Ismael period one
The main idea of "things fall apart" is that the things people may think arw important, may not turn out to be important. Like when Okonkwo thought it was a big deal to kill his son because he needed the street cred, but it just ened up hurting himself inside.

The main idea of my favorite poem in "Street Love" is that Daminan is expresing his love for Junice but she does not respond in any way because she as been hurt many times before.

Lisa,
I agree with you when you said that things falling apart is inevitable.

Mirialys R. per. 2
I also agree with lisa. The domino effect fits the book "Things fall Apart" perfectly. After one domino falls all the other fall. In the book Okonkwo falls but learns and he keeps trying. He is still able to maintain his family which all rely on.
Mirialys. per 2
Daniel period 7
I liked Michaela’s interpretation of the main idea. I like the way she describes Okonkwo as troubled and wants to always be the strong and brave because he is afraid of being seen as weak. The example of how he killed the boy points out this perfectly because he wanted to show everyone else that he didn’t feel emotion. In reality he did feel for Ikemefuna and I believe he regretted his decision. I also think that once he felt the remorse which in return he felt even weaker. This whole book he’s trying to be everything his father was not but in reality he is turning out worse then his father, even weaker then him.

Michaela,
I agree with your opinion that the main idea of "Things Fall Apart" is the struggle between Okonkwo and himself.
Emily p7
Ben, I disagree with you because I don't think that masculinity and anger are the main idea of the story. It is a major concern in the book, and it makes Okwonkwo how he is, but it's not the main idea. I agree with the idea that some other people said though, about Okwonkwo letting his want to be strong and masculine overcome what is important.

I strongly agree with Christina from period 2. Your right about Okonkwo's luster for respect and power being his downfall. This same type of mentality is seen today umong society and is hindering the ablity for people to be themslves.
Dani,
I agree with you that Okonkwo has alot of good fortune and then loses it.
Shelby per. 2
To: Christina period 2
I think Christina is right when she says that Okonkwo could have stopped himself from killing Ikemefuna. If he had not been so consumed with attaining great power and respect from his clansmen, he would not have killed his son in order to prove he was strong. His actions eventually lead to his down fall and "things falling apart" in the novel in my opinion.
Michaela Per. 2

The main idea of "Things Fall Apart" is that cultures may clash but you have to deal with problems as they come to you. Okonkwo did not know how to handle his problems, and he consistently had a bad approach. One thing leads to another in this book, and eventually everything that he knows of falls apart.

I know I responded to this on time, but my comment is not there... so I am redoing it :/
I completely agree with Christina Genet. I think his ego, and Okonkwo being so concerned with being manly really holds him back. I think lots of men are like that, feeling that they need to prove to the world their manliness. Most of the time all it takes is some sensitivity, humility, and compromise and I think the men in the world could make it a better place.
